September School

Getting back into the school groove is always tough after the lazy days of summer. In addition, we were staying in New Hampshire for an extra week while the big boys got settled in New York. We decided to enjoy local educational field trips for our final week in New Hampshire. We went to the Fairbanks Museum in St. Johnsbury, VT. The kids love looking at the eclectic collection from around the world. Rocks, stuffed animals, dinosaurs, and more.

Since I was home alone with the kids they came with me to all of my therapy appointments. They watched the Physical Therapist take me through my exercises and then stretch my hip. Afterward, we went to the playground where we kicked off our shoes and jumped into the river looking for rocks.

Once we arrived back in New York, it was time to get down to business. Our Memoria Press had arrived ahead of us so all we had to do was open to page 1 and get started. I decided to use Spell To Write and Read as a supplement to our Memoria reading and phonics lessons. However, my inquisitive young scholar wants to know every spelling rule. For instance, why do we have to add an h to the w for words like when, why, white? I don't know.

We have been really interested in astronomy since we read about constellations in Life of Fred. On Sunday September 28, we drove to Loomis to watch Daddy's soccer game. At the end of the game the huge moon loomed over us. The entire ride home Tucker kept his cheek smashed to the window as he tried to keep track of the super moon. We set up camp outside and watched the moon slowly disappear.

Now that October is here, we are spending lots of our time outside watching soccer. Between Daddy's games, and the kids we are on the pitch 3-4 days a week.

One of my favorite things about homeschooling is to read aloud. We have completed several wonderful books so far this term. Additionally, the kids have listened to several great audio books.
-Paddle to the Sea
-Pippi Longstocking
-D'Aulaires Greek Myths
-Story of the World volume 1
-Life of Fred Books A, B, C
-A Wonderbook for Kids by Hawthorne
-The Children's Book of Heroes by William Bennett
-Animals, Animals, Animals poems about animals
-Child's Book of Poem
